Travel Nursing Pay

Understanding your compensation package.

How Travel Nurses get paid

Unlike traditional staff positions, travel nurse compensation often includes multiple components. A standard package might include:

  • Hourly Wage: Your base rate for hours worked.
  • Housing and Meal Stipends:  Reimbursements to help cover living expenses while on assignment.
  • Travel Reimbursements: Costs for getting to and from your assignment.
  • Bonuses: Sign-on, completion, referral, or retention bonuses may be available.

Because you’re temporarily living away from home, many of these reimbursements may be provided as part of your travel benefits. To qualify, certain eligibility requirements must be met.

Travel nurse pay varies depending on several factors:

  • Location: States with higher living costs, such as California or New York, often offer higher pay.
  • Demand: Hard-to-fill roles or urgent staffing needs can come with premium rates.
  • Shift Type: Night, weekend, and holiday shifts usually pay more than day shifts.
  • Bonuses: Look for contracts that include extra incentives for contract completion, extension, or referrals.
